Guides / Sony
Sony × PopStudio
Tested bodies: a7 IV · a7 III · a7R V · a7R IV · a7C · a9 II · a6700 · a6600 · a6400 and most recent Alpha bodies
1 · Set the USB mode
Menu → Setup → USB → USB Connection Mode → “PC Remote”. Then under PC Remote Settings, set Still Img. Save Dest. to include the camera so frames also stay on your card.
2 · Plug in and go
- Set USB Connection Mode to PC Remote, then power the camera off.
- Connect to the laptop with a data USB-C cable.
- Power on. PopStudio names the body and turns green.
- Take a test shot to confirm it develops and delivers end to end.
That's the whole connection. PopStudio talks to the camera directly over USB —
there are no folders to configure, no manufacturer transfer utility to keep running, and no
cloud round-trip between the shutter and the guest's inbox.
3 · Sony things worth knowing
- Quit Imaging Edge Desktop before starting — it claims the camera.
- Sony menus move between generations. If you can’t find PC Remote, search your exact model plus “PC Remote USB” — the setting exists on every Alpha that supports tethering.
- Set JPEG quality to Fine. Extra Fine is unnecessary weight at queue pace.
Settings for every brand
A pop-up studio is fixed lighting. Set once before doors open, then don't touch — PopStudio's look handles the rest, identically on every frame.
| Mode | Manual (M) — the light doesn't change, so nothing should auto. |
|---|---|
| Shutter | 1/160–1/200 with strobes (at or under sync speed); 1/125+ in continuous light. |
| Aperture | f/5.6–f/8 — enough depth for groups of four without refocusing anxiety. |
| ISO | Lowest that exposes correctly — typically 100–200 strobed, 400–800 continuous. |
| White balance | Fixed — Flash preset or a measured K value. Never Auto: AWB drifts shot-to-shot and makes the look inconsistent. |
| File format | JPEG Large/Fine. RAW+JPEG is fine if you want your own archive — PopStudio uses the JPEG. |
| Picture style | Neutral/Standard, sharpening default. Let the PopStudio look carry the character — double-styling fights itself. |
| Focus | AF-S / One-shot, single centre point or eye-AF. Tape the zoom ring once framed. |
Test shot rule: before doors open, shoot a frame of a person (not the empty backdrop), check it lands in PopStudio and the look reads right on the delivered photo. Two minutes now saves a whole evening.
